Holliston Lions Club: Fighting Preventable Blindness

by Doreen Martel 6/23/2019

When Lions were issued a challenge by Helen Keller to pick up her mantle and become “Knights of the Blind”, the Holliston Lions Club was not even a thought. In fact, at that time in 1925, Lions in Massachusetts were part of District 33, which contained seven clubs in Massachusetts, one in Maine. Massachusetts Lions had no specific eye programs, they typically handled issues with blindness within their own Clubs, or District. That changed in 1950.

Holliston Lions to End Year with a Bang!

by Doreen Martel 6/1/2019

The Holliston Lions Club’s year will come to an end on June 30th. This is perfect timing since their annual carnival is going to be in town from June 26 to June 29th with the carnival ending as it has for many years with a firework display on June 29th at 9:30pm. More details can be found on the Holliston Lions website.   Thanks for Ongoing Support The Holliston Lions Club is fortunate to have annual sponsors at different levels who provide us with funding that is desperately needed to continue serving our community. In addition to our annual sponsors, we would also like to thank those who have helped us on single events like the Winning o’ the Green raffle. Businesses from across Holliston help make this event one of the largest fundraising events of the year. The proceeds from this event help us provide scholarships, support the Holliston Pantry Shelf and more. Without your donations of money, services and items, we could not continue to do the work we do.

Holliston Lions - Service With a Mission

by Doreen Martel 3/27/2019

The Holliston Lions Club performs many service projects and fundraising events. Annual events like our $10,000 raffle go to support many important programs not only in Holliston but across Massachusetts and internationally. On a state-wide basis, the majority of our “out-of-Holliston” donations go to support Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc.  This is no accident, in fact, it is part of our overall mission which was a result of a challenge issued by Massachusetts native Helen Keller.

In Celebration of Women's History Month: History of Women in Lions Clubs

by Doreen Martel 3/20/2019

Amy Porter, Pam Zicko, Linda Ahronian, Louise Kirkpatrick and Lisa Zais. Residents of Holliston will recognize these women’s names because they have all been recognized as Citizen of the Year for Holliston. But there’s something you may not know. These women also are part of the world’s largest service organization, Lions Clubs International (LCI). The Holliston Lions Club became part of LCI in 1941. At that time, women were not allowed to be part of Lions, despite the fact Lions obtained their mission — eradicating blindness — from a woman, specifically, Helen Keller. It is also worth noting that the “Lions Toast,” which is unique to Massachusetts and reads simply “Not above you, not beneath you but with you” was written by the wife of a Lions Club member in Lynn, Massachusetts.

Holliston Lions Club: Join Us for a Meet & Greet

by Doreen Martel 3/3/2019

Volunteers: They are the lifeblood of every fraternal organization, many civic groups, and others. Lions are no different: Without people who are willing to commit time to the Club's pursuits, we could not be successful raising funds - and as importantly, we would have "fewer" voices deciding how those funds we do raise are spent. The Lions "year" runs from July 1 to June 30 every year. Each year, we like to reach out to folks in the community to meet with us and see how the Club operates and functions. We've done this at various venues and using different formats for several years. Over the years, we've added valuable members to our Club by inviting people who may not otherwise know much about what we do to participate. This year, we are issuing an invitation to members of the community to join the members of the Holliston Lions Club for dinner on March 20, 2019.

February 14: Organ Donor Awareness Day

by Doreen Martel 2/14/2019

Anyone who watched Channel 5 on Tuesday February 12th couldn't have missed the piece “The Race Against Time”  on the Boston police officer who was on the organ donor list waiting for a lung transplant. Fortunately, he was one of the lucky ones. This year, like those in the past, Valentine’s Day is National Donor Day. There are hundreds of myths about organ donation and the Holliston Lions Club feels it’s important to dispel some of those myths. Lions have, for many years, supported efforts to educate the public about organ donation.

We seldom hear about the good work done by young people in our community. In Holliston, we are fortunate to have several groups of volunteers who give of their time selflessly to make Holliston a better place for everyone. One of those groups of volunteers are the students who participate in the Honor Society. Not only do these young people make their parents proud, they make everyone in town proud! On October 29, 2018, we had an opportunity to see what a difference these students make in our community.
