It was a short while before the game, when a veteran of the Holliston High School Baseball Alumni Team approached a group of seniors on this year’s varsity baseball team, and with a degree of arrogance, told them “Don’t worry guys, you get to play for us next year!”  At the time, the statement reflected the reasonable likelihood that the game played this past Sunday at the High School, would reflect the results of the alumni games played from 1976 to 2006, when the game was an annual highlight on the High School Team’s schedule, and the alumni would typically dominate, rolling up a 28-2 (1 rainout)record  during the period.

But nothing lasts forever, and when Massachusetts Hall of Fame Coach Harvey Krupnick left his Holliston coaching post following the 2006 season, the game disappeared with him.  After years of discussion but no action, second year Varsity Coach Jason Hoye decided to resurrect the game this year, and the performance of his young squad against the heavy legged, arm weary, dedicated diamond disciples of the past on Sunday would cause his seniors to think twice before joining their ranks next year.  The varsity rolled to a relatively easy 10-1 victory over yesterday’s heroes, who will now have a year to dwell on their diminished abilities, and hard ball shortcomings.

For the varsity, the game was a highlight of a year focused on building for the future.  For the alumni, the game was an opportunity to reminisce and renew friendships, as well as to connect with today’s Panther Squad.  From that viewpoint, both teams left as winners.

With Coach Hoye manning the third base dugout, Coach Krupnick returned to guide the alumni from the first base side, and on his side he found a player from the past, who proved that age was no obstacle.  Mike Betti, Holliston High School Class of 1967 returned to the field, and proved that he still had the right stuff.  He delivered a strong 2 for 2 performance at the plate and was flawless in the field, earning the admiration of all in attendance.  The smile on his face was wider than the strike zone, and it was clear to see that this former catcher was glad to be home.

Also glad to be home to the field that he ruled for more than three decades was Coach Krupnick.  “It’s great to have our Alumni Game back after a six year layoff,” he said. “It’s a breath of fresh air for all the former varsity baseball players here for a game of fun.”

David Connors, a Boston College student, 2011 HHS graduate and first time Alumni Game participant said, “I’m really happy to be back playing ball again.  It’s a lot of fun for us, and it’s great for keeping the program healthy and active.”  Hopefully this year’s seniors agree, and will be happy to cross over to the alumni for the 2014 encounter.
