High School Kid Next Door Getting on Your Nerves?

Is the high school kid next door getting on your nerves?

Maybe he plays his music a little too loud, drives his car a little too fast or stays outside with his friends a little too late for your tastes. But the next time he has a party, you might want to reconsider your urge to call the police and instead bring over a plate of your world famous nachos. For the truth is that young neighbor might be destined for greatness.

Indeed, 2012 has been a banner year for young people from Holliston. The year began with news of Kevin Systrom and his success (deliberate understatement) with Instagram, continued with the debut of Adam Green’s horror based sit-com Holliston on the FEARnet Television Network, and is concluding with the release of American Chainsaw, a National Geographic Network show featuring chainsaw artist "The Machine” Jesse Green (Forget that Medway stuff; we know where you’re from).

But before we close out 2012, there is a new name to add to our honor roll. Drum roll, please...

McKay Coppins, a 2005 Holliston High School graduate, was just named to Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30 in Media list. Coppins is the Politics editor for Buzzfeed, which is described as a website focused on capturing “the viral web in real time”. In naming Coppins, Forbes indicates “This Newsweek veteran brought his talents to hot media start-up Buzzfeed, where he serves as resident expert on the conservative movement and the intersection of politics and religion. A CNN contributor, he was all over cable news during the presidential campaign.” Word of a street level campaign promoting a Coppins run for Mayor of New York City has also reached the HollistonReporter offices.

Not bad for the former Central Street resident. While in Holliston, Coppins was known for professionally promoting dances at the Town Hall and VFW (as a Middle School student), his work on the high school newspaper, as well as for hosting some of the best (and best supervised) parties for his classmates.

Maybe it’s time to make the nachos?

Every year when I start teaching a new course I remember his article about receiving multitudes of syllabi the first day of school and getting a lecture or handout on respecting property. I may misremember it exactly, but he wrote about telling his ruler and pencils how much he respected them. My classes don't know why I start chuckling to myself on the first day of school.

His weekly articles were the best in the TAB, always a pleasure to read. I missed them when he moved out of town. Bill Tobin

I was a huge fan of McKay's articles in the Tab...during his high school days his work was informative, humorous and edgy...thanks, John, for the update...AnnT
