Week #2: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 4/14)

by Ken Sawyers
4/18/2019

Week 2:

Kampersal rocked The Hood 22-4 behind OF Chris Boggess’s 4 hits and 5 RBI’s while lead-off hitter Derek Jordan scored 5 times.  Hood OF Greg Andreaola was seen on his phone in the dugout during the 5th inning presumably talking with his agent.  Seems the All-Star slugger is fed-up with the losing atmosphere and may reach out to close friend and DYR 2B Ben Leverone to discuss a potential move.  South edged Mudviile 17-15 as rookie P Gregg Copeland went the distance for his first win.  Fill-in manager Jason Smith created quite the buzz when he hinted that they may have found their new starter in Copeland as he filled in for veteran P- Mngr Bryan Sweeney’s.  No word yet if Sweeney has put a ‘hit’ out on Smith or Copeland.   OF Steve Lawless was also a week 2 no show and has now put him squarely in the cross-hairs of his volatile skipper.  We’ll keep an eye on this in the weeks ahead.  Braggville edge Lions 27-4 behind P Chris Connors’ 7-strong innings of 4-hit ball and 4 hits by OF Paul Murphy.  Jasper Rock topped Brentwood 7-2 as 3B Doug Herman kicked off his season on a high note with 3 hits and 3 RBI’s to pace Jasper.  Downtown smacked Long Distance 12-1, despite missing their Cassandra Lane contingent.  Seems like the neighborhood Book Club took precedence over softball-just this writer’s opinion. Long Distance was without the services of 1B Chris Landers who felt a day trip to Provincetown with his wife’s Horticulture Club was more important than joining his teammates in their opening game. Teammates are none too pleased.  DYR took advantage of an undermanned Anthony’s East squad and scored an 18-4 victory as C Mark (Yukon) Eagan went 4-4 with 5 RBI’s.  P Justin Lessard’s off-season work with Luis Tiant paid early dividends as he went the distance giving up just 6-hits.  Dalton Rd pounded Queens 18-4 as OF Tim McDevitt went 4-5 and scored 4 times to pace Dalton.  P Dave Birmingham missed the contest to play in Teddy KGB’s annual poker tournament at Mohegan Sun.  (No word on his whereabouts as of this writing.) Utilityman Jack ’Brock Holt’ Kober took the hill and twirled a gem leaving us with another team with a pitching controversy.  Interesting to see how manager Steve Cotto handles this as the clubhouse seems evenly split as to who should be the #1 starter.

GAME OF THE WEEK for WK #3 (4/28/19)

DYR (1-0) vs Kampersal (1-0): @ Stoddard Park

This early season ‘A’ match-up features 2 teams with aspirations to be in the ‘A’ finals in June.   DYR has won the last 2 match-ups vs Kampersal but Kampy’s seems to have found their swagger and this looks to be a tough match up for DYR this early in the season.  Look for a complete breakdown of this game in the next edition of my column.

The League is off next week in Observance of Easter so, we return to action on 4/28.

Ken - That picture can't be me, there's no dugout in Holliston w/ a brickwall ..... Sweeney is not a Mason!

I have Andreola on my Fantasy team and I benched Drohan on a hunch. Great week.
