Week #5: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 5/13)

Week 5 saw Dalton Rd remain undefeated with a 15-3 pasting of Brentwood.  The ‘Thunder and Lightning’ duo were back at it as leadoff man OF Tim McDevitt had 3 hits and scored 3 times while slugger and future Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champ, Dave Birmingham drove in 4 with 2 doubles.   (Birm will be in the ring this week fighting for charity in the Haymakers for Hope event to help KO cancer.)  Best of luck Birm, and remember, “eye of the tiger’!  Dalton 3B Mike Silk was placed into the league’s concussion protocol after going 0-4 in 4 horrendous AB’s and then wandered out to the Placentino playground inexplicably in the bottom of the 5th.  Thoughts and prayers, Silky….The Hood failed to show up to their game against DYR which means they owe DYR a 30-pack as a make good.

DYR moves to 3-2 with the 7-0 forfeit win.  Downtown avoided a 3-game losing streak and held on for a 9-8 win over Lions behind a game-saving, over-the-shoulder catch by LF Scott Burke in the bottom of the 7th on an Ernie Tomacelli bomb to left-center field.  The win staved off a potential mutiny as a 3-game skid would’ve put manager Mike Adams on the hot seat with his veterans who are still miffed at the treatment of star slugger Tim McCarron.  Team sentiment has 1B Joe “Rainman” Gentile as the replacement should Adams continue with his curious in-game decisions and goofy line-ups.

Mudville slipped by South 9-6 as they welcomed pitcher Steve Miller back from a 1-week Dungeons and Dragons fantasy camp in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.  The 70’s rocker kept South off-balance all night with his array of off-speed pitches.  The offense was led by ‘the fittest SS on earth’, Mark Landry who had 3 hits and 4 RBI in the win.  Mark will be competing in the CrossFit Games this summer in Madison, WI in the 60+ age group to try and become the fittest 60 yr old on the planet (no joke). Nothing prepares an athlete for that kind of high-level competition than Holliston Sr Softball.  Best of luck, Mark!

LF Tom Kampersal follows through on his first inning sacrifice fly to spark a 6-run first for Kampersal Electric in a 14-6 win over Long Distance Tire.

A slight juggle of the line-up propelled Kampersal to stay unbeaten with a 14-6 win over Long Distance Tire.  New leadoff man CF Derek Jordon had more hits (3) and scored more runs (3) in this game than original lead-off man, Tom Kampersal has had all year.   C Brian McShane recorded the first extra base hit in his life, a 2-run triple in the first.   In another first, LDT OF Eric Brucato struck out looking on 2 pitches without a swing.  That has to be some sort of team fine, no?  3B Chris Landers continues to struggle with men on base leaving 7 men on and saw his average dropped to .188.  A true professional though, he doesn’t let it affect his defense as he only had 3 errors on the night.

Braggville pounded the Queens 16-1 as legendary C Matt Fair collected 4 hits and 4 RBI in the win.  Anthony’s East topped Jasper Rock 9-5.  But the real news here was Anthony’s SS David Robinson played with a hat on for the first time in his career.  He proceeded to make 2 unlikely errors then ditched the hat and went on to collect 3 hits and 3 RBI in the win while making several key defensive plays in the later innings.  Player-manager John Shanahan downloaded the Waze app (thanks to the Grandkids) onto his iPhone 2 and made it to the correct field on the first try enabling him to take much needed BP.
