What's Wrong With This Picture

Eye-witnesses reported that the driver was very apologetic and did not know what a rail trail was (the driver was obviously so very lost). Witnesses thought the driver may have gotten on at Summer Street (Route 126), must have driven through the tunnel, and was finally stymied at the narrow crossing over Arch St.

HollistonReporter.com does not know who took the photos.

There needs to be a large boulder placed in the middle of the trail, on the northbound side of Summer St. I do not believe a sign will do the trick. These drivers know full well that it's a trail, but they also realize it's a good way to avoid waiting in the line at the Summer/Washington stop sign. Judging from the tire marks I saw in the recycled paving material on this section of the trail last fall, it has been used as a short cut for a while.

I saw someone just the other day trying to turn into the rail trail from Summer St. Agree that there need to be signs.

Clearly this driver was taking the personal initiative in plotting out alternative routes to avoid down town traffic. Maybe he/she is planning on presenting at Town Meeting alternatives to the down town plan?

I'm not sure when this happened but another vehicle was stopped last night on Cross St. after entering from Summer St. Seems to be a new shortcut.

Perhaps after a liquid lunch..

How in the world could anyone not know that is walking trail, and not a public ( or even peivate) road? I understand it is not the first time cars have been on the rail trail but it still mystifies me.

Every other bike path I have been on has either bollards or signs at road crossings. "Motorized vehicles prohibited" or some such signs would be a good investment. They would eliminate the "oh, I didn't realize it was a trail" excuse.

Oh my goodness! I didn't honestly think that someone could make this "mistake", but just so Holliston knows... The "Friends of Holliston Trails" group is fundraising now for installing suitable barriers that would stop this from happening in the future. Want to join the cause?? Email us thru www.HollistonTrails.org for more information.
