The excitement is already beginning to build as the town of Holliston sets to host the third annual Five Town Special Olympics Games. This event will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Holliston High School field house. Students from grades three and older from the towns of Holliston, Medway, Millis, Medfield, and Ashland will participate.

The inaugural event focused on basketball and was hosted by the Medfield Schools.  Seventy athletes from the five participating towns attended, including 28 representing Holliston.  Opening Ceremonies included representatives from the Boston Celtics. “Lucky”, the Celtic’s highflying mascot, put on a breathtaking performance. Last year the Five Town Special Olympic Games were held in Medway. The sport was soccer. Eighty students from the five participating towns attended, including 26 students representing Holliston. Opening Ceremonies included “Slyde”, the New England Revolution team mascot.

More students than ever are expected to participate in this year’s Games. The sport will be track and field. The committee is working hard planning transportation, the opening ceremonies, and the individual athletic events. First Responders and their vehicles will escort the student athletes to Holliston High School.  The opening ceremonies will include Holliston’s student athletes leading the Parade of Athletes into the Holliston High School field house. They will then lead in the singing of the National Anthem and reciting of the Special Olympics Athletes’ Oath. The athletic activities of the day are being designed to ensure all student athletes, no matter their ability, are provided the opportunity to fully participate in these Olympic Games.

Committee members include staff members of the Holliston Schools, Holliston Police officers, school representatives from the other participating towns, and Cory Zarrella, Massachusetts Special Olympics Associate South Section Director.

I'm so happy this event is happening each year and now here at home. Many of these students I had back when they were 3 and 4 years old in my classroom. I'm so proud of them and hope I can get to see at least some of the event this year when it is in Holliston!
