Successful Save of Suicidal Person

Detective Thompson,

On October 15, 2014 you and Officer Andy MacGray responded to a residence on an alarm call. You, upon arriving first and being familiar with the property for its structural and electronic safety features, began your check of the house from the rear. Once you directed a flashlight towards the house it became clear to you that smoke was coming from the interior of the building. Through your quick thinking and agile ability you were able to enter the secure area of the property without deactivating the alarm or opening the gate. Once inside you became aware of a running vehicle inside the attached garage. Through a window you saw a person in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, and it was quickly apparent to you that this was a suicide attempt in progress. With the help of Officer MacGray who had joined you at this point, the two of you were able to break a double pane window and gain access to the inside of the garage. Both of you then took the quick action to remove this person from the vehicle and the garage, and summonsed assistance from the ambulance squad for a medical transport.

This was an extraordinary effort on the part of yourself and Officer MacGray. We are, and you should be, extremely proud of your actions. This was truly a life saving event and the courage and ingenuity displayed by the two of you makes you a credit to the profession and the town you serve.

Thank you for upholding the high professional standards of this department, and more importantly, caring enough of others to ensure their safety and security.

Respectfully Awarded to You,

Chief John J. Moore

Successful Save of Suicidal Person

Officer MacGray,

On October 15, 2014 you and Detective Chad Thompson responded to a residence on an alarm call. Detective Thompson arrived first and you joined him once he gained access to the secure area of the property. Upon Detective Thompson’s observation of a person inside a running vehicle parked inside a closed garage, which was apparently a suicide attempt in progress, the two of you were able to break a double pane window and gain access to the inside of the garage. Both of you then took the quick action to remove this person from the vehicle and the garage, and summonsed assistance from the ambulance squad for a medical transport.

This was an extraordinary effort on the part of yourself and Detective Thompson.

Response to Suicidal Person Threat on FaceBook

Sergeant Stone,

On October 16, 2014 while managing the social media presence of the department, and also being off duty, you came upon a private message addressed to the police facebook page that stated, “I am going to kill myself in my garage’. Within a minute of receiving this message you contacted Lieutenant Dave Gatchell, and expeditious efforts were made to determine the address of where the threat came from and the individual involved. Within five minutes of the message patrol officers were on their way to the residence. The officers spoke to the man that had posted the threat, and they convinced him to travel by ambulance to a hospital so that his issues could be addressed.

Your attention to detail and your quick actions in this matter quite possibly prevented a human tragedy in this case. We are very proud of your actions here, as you should be too, and the family of the man who posted this threat are, I am sure, extremely grateful to you.

Thank you for upholding the high professional standards of this department, and more importantly, caring enough of others to ensure their safety and security.

Respectfully Awarded to You,

Chief John J. Moore
