The First Congregational Church of Holliston will be hosting the 1728 Coffee
House on January 11, 2014 to raise funds for BASK, a non-profit training
facility for balance dogs. BASK is a 501c3 non-profit service dog foundation
that provides and supports specially trained assistance dogs to enhance mobility
and independence through canine partnerships.

Founder Christina Rossetti initially created BASK after noticing that there was
a lack of quality training facilities for dogs to assist with balance and
stability. Although there are increasing numbers of companion dogs for people
with specific needs, many people need dogs to help them walk, retrieve dropped
items, get in and out of chairs, etc. The few foundations that provide balance
dogs operate on a campus, which can lead to issues once the dogs are matched to
a home. According to Rossetti, balance dogs should be trained in the home of a
client. This way, the dogs can train according to layout of the home, and
specific needs and physical limitations of the client.

Only a year old. K-9 BASK is run by volunteers. Each dog trained costs $2,000,
and can be sponsored through the organization’s website, www.bask9.org. Besides
funds to cover expenses, Rossetti is looking for a volunteer veterinarian, as
well as homes to provide puppy respite on weekends. More information on becoming
involved with K9 BASK can be found on the website, along with pictures of the
puppies in training. There will also be information about getting involved at
the 1728 Coffee House
