Softball Supremacy

The St. Louis Browns and Montreal Expos, baseball teams separated by time and league association, never had the opportunity to face each on the diamond. But it was a different story last weekend when teams bearing those names, met at Damigella Field to decide Holliston fall softball supremacy.

Dan Geary singles for the Expos.

For Brown’s manager Keith Buday, a trip to the fall softball finals is as familiar as the falling of leaves. Since the league’s founding in 2005, Buday’s presence at the last dance has become a predictable constant in a league that prides itself on teams changing every year. In 2009, Buday led the Whalers to the league championship, enjoying the fine performance of his star shortstop Dan Geary. This year, as the Expos manager, Geary would have the opportunity to wrest the Lindsey Cup away from Buday, who had won it again in 2012 as manager of the Knights.

Mike Woods belts one for the Browns.

And that’s what happened. The Expos trailed 5-3 when they scored five runs in the fifth inning, one more in the sixth and four in the seventh, leading to a 13-6 victory. Steve Cotto, Marty Meyer, Kevin Hastings, and Chris Gioffre joined Geary in collecting three hits each for the Expos, who capitalized on a fine Jon Trombley pitching performance. Jack Kober had two hits and two runs scored (and knowing Jack, probably made two great catches), with Scott Burke, Dave Birmingham, Dan Higgins, Dave Zak, Paul Clasby, Dave McNeil, Bill Heuer and John Fanara contributing base hits. Also of value were the season long contributions of Jon Stott, as well as the outstanding work of team statistician, Joey Gioffre.

As the season ends, not to be forgotten is Derek Cordon, the man who handles the details that allow 75 men a fun night out, as well as Bob Lindsey, the man for whom the league championship trophy is named, and who presumably looks down upon the Sunday evening assemblage, ever ready to deliver just one more pitch.

Congratulations to the Fall League champions! My dad Bob was so honored to have the trophy named after him. Rest assured he is watching over the Sunday night games as mentioned with a big smile. Shauna
