Flower Show

The 2013 Boston Flower and Garden Show opened to the public on Wednesday at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. This year’s theme is “Seeds of Change,” focusing on new plants, methods and materials to increase the bounty, beauty, and ecological friendliness of our outdoor spaces.

More than 20 inspiring landscapes illustrate modern trends in landscape design, from outdoor living rooms to green roofs, water features, vertical gardens, children’s gardens and meditation areas. The expanded lecture offerings include timely topics such as Sustainable Gardens, Rain Gardens, Edible Landscapes, and Simplifying Our Gardens to Fit Our Lifestyles. Local chefs will teach you how to grow, use and preserve produce and herbs for year-round enjoyment. Demonstrations will focus on how to raise chickens and keep bees – two of the fastest growing garden-related hobbies. Floral design, horticulture and photography competitions also feature the “Seeds of Change” theme.

The Boston Flower Show would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers that work largely behind the scenes to stage this incredible event. As in past years, many members of the Holliston Garden Club are working around the clock this week to make the show a success. From managing the Division II Flower Show to creating the staging for the floral competition, manning the computer stations, helping floral designers bring in and set up their materials, creating floral designs, daily watering and sprucing up the floral arrangements, and judging the entries, the Flower Show is a week of whirlwind activity for the Club.

It is well worth the effort, though, as this year’s Flower Show is sure to please. The Show runs until Sunday, March 17. (www.bostonflowershow.com)
