No Smoke Signal Necessary

by John "Choo-Choo" Shannahan

Holliston history records that more than 350 years ago, the young Jasper Adams would climb the hill that now bears his name, and from a rock located near its summit, send smoke signals to his family in Medfield.  These smoke signals were the means by which he communicated with his family, and they ever watchful, would respond in kind.

Jasper Adams would die childless in 1742 at the age of 95, and since his passing, no man has climbed that hill with a greater sense of purpose or bravado.  Yet this past Sunday night, a Holliston man possessing unwavering resolve, would climb to similar heights, and no smoke signal was necessary to confirm his presence.

That man is Doug Hermann.  Six days a week Doug is a typical Holliston family man, but on springtime Sunday evenings, he dons the familiar purple and yellow jersey of the Jasper Rock softball team and becomes a diamond superhero.  Never was this more evident than this past weekend when Doug’s three for three performance with a triple and flawless fielding, led these modern day sons of Jasper to a 10-3 victory over Mudville.  For his effort, Doug is named the HollistonReporter Player of the Week.

The win helped push Jasper Rock into a three way tie for first in Division B with the similarly victorious Queens and Brentwood teams.  In the A Division, Braggville topped Dalton Road 9-2 in a battle of the undefeated.  Kampersals also remained undefeated by virtue of their 10-2 victory over a tough team from The Hood.  Late inning heroics by Wayne Peterson and David Robinson allowed Casey’s East to squeak by a tough DYR squad.

The scores:

Queens 10 Lions 4

Kampersal 10  The Hood 2

Braggville 9  The Hood 2

Downtown 5  Long Distance Tire 2

Brentwood 7  South 6

Jasper Rock 10  Mudville 3
