Senior Softball League Begins 41st Season

The Holliston Senior Softball League, known in some circles as Old Man Softball, began its 41st season of play on  Sunday.  While some things remain the same, there was on obvious difference.

That difference was that for the first time, Bob Lindsey did not take the mound for the East squad, and stare towards home plate before delivering another one of his nearly unhittable serves.  Bob was severely injured in an accident last fall, and while he may have been physically absent, his presence was still very much in evidence.

Also in evidence, as it has been for many years, are signs that Braggville will once again be the team to beat, as determined by their 16-10 drubbing of South, a perennial league power.  The Braggville/South encounter was one of seven games played, as the teams began their eleven week season (all games on Sunday nights, except Memorial Day weekend).

In the upset of the night, Kevin Clancy, better known as the serious and wise overseer of Town Meeting, proved himself a softball star as he led the Lions Club to a 12-11 upset of Long Distance Tire.  Early in the game, Clancy had provided the Lions a triple and a double, while turning a nifty double play.  In the final inning, Long Distance owner Kevin Conley instructed his pitcher Rob Sancomb to walk the Lions Craig Landry so as to face Clancy. Clancy repaid the snub with a walk off RBI single, his fifth RBI of the game, and the Lions were victorious.  For his stellar performance, Clancy has been named the HollistonReporter Player of the Week.

The scores for the week are as follows:

Downtown 6   The Hood 1

Braggville 16   South 10

Brentwood at Mudville (night)

Kampersal 14   DYR 3

Dalton Road 8   Jasper Rock 7

Lions Club 12   Long Distance Tire 11

Casey’s East 29   Queens 8

Was the Casey's vs. Queens a football game or softball?
