Rail Trails: UK Style

(The station as it existed before conversion).

Hollistonians maybe interested in my hometown's coversion from railroad to a cycle/footpath/bridlepath and forms part of Sustrans Cycle network which covers the whole of the UK.

This was once one of the busiest rail tracks of the area but fell into disuse after the WW2 when the British Army closed their barracks along with many track systems all over the UK in a cost-cutting exercise.

Blacon residents approved a Community Project to improve various areas and this was the latest. Five Local Schools helped in the Design and even made ceramic tiles to form a four meter mosaic wheel (below), the top half of which represents the rail track and the bottom half, a cycle wheel to link the two together.

There are only a few railroad/highway crossings in the UK so we don't have a big problem as in MA.
