My brother and sister-in-law will be arriving soon for yet another visit from out of state. Last year when the two of them returned from a walk, their clothing smelled of pot. My two teens who were at home instantly picked up on their uncle and aunt's scent and later told me that if it is o.k. for the relatives to smoke pot, they to should be allowed to. Should I approach Steve and Susan prior to their arrival and ask that they exercise in a healthy manner, or just send them along on their constitutional with a can of air freshner?

Dear Concerned Parents,
My first instinct was to go with the air freshner. Then I thought, hang on,  this is a great teaching moment.  You can discuss lifestyle choices, health consequences and legal issues. Your teens know people smoke pot, this can be a stepping off point for a great discussion with your teens. They will eventually make their own choices, better to have them informed of your values.

Have you seen the movie Reefer Madness?  This move graphically documents the dangers of 'mary-jane' to impressionable young children and that movie was made in 1938. Marijuana is  a horrible, horrible drug that is a stepping-stone to harder more dangerous drugs.  This is not just 'my opinion' but is based on sound scientific research.   My recommendation to you is to refuse to have your dope-infused relatives stay with you.  If you can't do that, notify the local police about their habits and with any luck they will be picked-up while out on one of their 'walks' and your children will see first hand what happens to deviants like them.
