Conventional cleaners can contain hazardous ingredients such as organic solvents or petroleum-based chemicals that can release volatile compounds into your home. This can pose particular risks to children.
Avoiding petroleum-based products also helps reduce carbon emissions. Look for nontoxic, vegetable based, biodegradable cleaners or try making your own cleaner using vinegar, water and Castile soap.
A simple online search (re: Natural cleaners) provides a host of ideas for non-toxic cleaning solutions.
