Week #9: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 6/9)

Week 9:

Dalton rode the right arm of phenom P Dave Birmingham in a 15-8 win over Kampersal.  Kampy's jumped out to an early 5-0 lead leaving a flustered Birmingham alone with his thoughts in the dugout after the top half of the first.

Dalton Rd P Dave Birmingham sweating it out after a rough 1st inning.

But the Dalton bats stayed hot and responded with a 10-run bottom half of the first which seemed to settle the husky pitcher down as he gave up just 4 hits and 1 earned run the rest of the way.  1B Jaime Ross led the offense with 4 hits and 4 RBI while OF Tim McDevitt had 3 hits and scored 4 times. The usually reliable Kampy defense went missing this game so fiery manager Tom Kampersal held an impromptu infield practice post game.  Sources tell me a team meeting this week is likely.

The 2019 soap opera that is South took down Anthony’s 14-9 behind rookie phenom P Greg Copeland’s arm and bat as he pitched a complete game giving up just 5 ER and went 5-5 with 3 RBI at the plate.  SS Jason Smith is now 2-0 as manager prompting some teammates to question whether P/Mgr Bryan Sweeney is needed at all since he was absent again this week attending his son’s HS graduation pool-party.

Sweeney in his pool while his teammates battle Anthony’s in a key ‘A’ match up. OF Stephen Lawless (not pictured) was also rumored to be at the party. No word if they’ll be welcomed back next week.

Chad Engel completed 22-29 passes for 297 yards and 3 TD’s as Braggville squeaked by Downtown 31-11.  OF’s Dan Kittredge and Chris Cordani each hit 2 HR’s while SS Matt Baker went yard as well.  Johnny Marsell capped the night with a grand slam in the 7th to stretch the lead to 20.

Downtown P Mike Adams sought professional help after the beating he and his teammates took Sunday night against Braggville.

DYR shutout Jasper 5-0.  That is all.  Mudville stopped the Hood train with a 12-7 victory behind the arm of P Steve ‘the Gangster of Love’ Miller who had 2 key late-inning K’s to thwart Hood rallies.  Johnny Cognac and Jay Wyman delivered key RBI’s in the 5th and 6th to stretch the lead.  Long Distance Tire doubled up Lions 14-7 as OF Eric Brucato led the way with 4 hits and 5 RBI.

And, throw the records out when these 2 teams meet (you have to or you won’t watch), Queens edged Brentwood 12-11 as SS John Abucewicz singled in the winning run in the top of the 7th to cap off a 4-4 night.

WEEK 10 Preview GAME OF THE WEEK: (4-1 for the yr on my picks)

 Kampersal (5-2) vs Downtown (3-4) @ Stoddard

Too many scenarios that could play out in this final week of the regular season to determine play-off match ups but Kampy’s needs a win and some help from other teams to get to the ‘A’ game.  So, that motivation should be enough to push them past a still shell-shocked Downtown club that is poised to lose its 3rd in a row.
