March Volunteer of the Month

The Give Back to Givers Volunteer of the Month is Dave O'Neil.

What made you want to get involved in volunteering?

As I retired from a career in finance and general management, I knew that I wanted to give some of my time back to the community. Once I found the Pantry, I believed that I could use my organizational and financial skills to help improve the knowledge of the Board in all Pantry business matters.

What have you done in the past as volunteer work?

In the past, throughout my career, I never quite found the time between working and being a husband and a dad to three, to doing any volunteer work.

What do you currently do as volunteer work?

I have been the Treasurer of the Pantry for the past 10 years. These duties involve recording and depositing the donations, paying the bills, and support to the Board by handling all business matters.  I am also responsible to report back to the Pantry Board our current cash flows and projections for the future.

I am also the volunteer coordinator to have our purchases of groceries picked up and delivered back to the Pantry. We have the support of over a dozen people on the road 4 days of the week performing this task.

What is your favorite part of volunteering?

Seeing the smiles on our customers faces as they do their grocery shopping  in a confidential environment, knowing that their community supports them. This is especially true around holidays.

What have you gotten out of volunteering?

Satisfaction that I am helping, in a small way, those in my community who need a bit of help.  It also gives me personally an amount of purpose in my retirement years.
