Week #8: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 6/3)

by Ken Sawyers
6/6/2018

Week 8 had a key ‘A’ match-up as DYR beat Kampersal 11-5 behind bat and glove of CF Jay Miller.  Miller hit a 2-run HR in the 1st and then made a sensational over-the-shoulder catch on an opposite field bomb by Kampy’s Tom Kampersal to end a threat in the 4th.  DYR blew open a 3-3 tie in the 4th with an 8-run inning sparked by 6 consecutive singles.  The DYR win keeps the log jam in ‘A’ and looks like we’ll need these last 2 weeks of the regular season to determine playoff pairings.  Braggville nipped Downtown 27-4 behind SS Matt Baker’s 4 hits and 5 RBI’s and seems to be in the driver’s seat for a spot in the ‘A’ championship game.  Anthony’s East needed 9 innings to beat Mudville 17-12 and wipe out the heroics of Mudville 3B Eric Kuharich whose 2-out, 2-run single tied the game in the bottom of the 7th and gave him his 4th hit of the night.  But before his big hit, we had a bit of controversy.  Leading off in the bottom of 7th, Andrew Johnson hit a dribbler out in front of the plate but touched the fair ball with his bat on his recoil while running to first.  He was correctly ruled out IF he was out of the batter’s box.  Mudville SS, Mark Landry (the fittest SS on earth) vehemently argued the call during the game (saying he was still in the box) and postgame at Anthony’s had to be restrained when discussing with commissioner, John Shanahan.  Here is the rule, Mark (Rule 5.09(a)(8)).  In the top of the 9th, Mudville’s defensive was at it again and allowed 9 runs as their outfield of Stephen Hawking, Stevie Wonder, Christopher Reeve, and Rocky Dennis were unable to make the plays when needed.  The Lions hung tough but fell to Dalton Rd, 21-1 as P Jack Kober silenced the bat of Ernie ‘The Hit Man’ Tomacelli as well as the rest of the Lions line-up.   South edged Queens 11-9 as South RF Jon Goldberg had a big 2-run single in the 6th to put South ahead to stay.

Jasper Rock beat the Hood 12-6 as 3B Doug Herman broke out of a season -long slumber with a 4 hit, 4 RBI night while player/manager Derek Cordon had 2 hits and 3 RBI.  In a key ‘B’ match-up (if that’s possible), Brentwood picked up a much-needed win, 15-14 over Long Distance Tire.

GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW:

Anthony’s East (6-2) vs Kampersal (6-2) @ Dimagella Field 6pm

  • Playoff-type atmosphere here -we’ll see both teams crank up the intensity as they each look to grab hold of 3rd place. Kampersal should have their complete line-up for this one and will be playing with a bit more urgency as they are coming off a loss.  Anthony’s is a veteran team though, (Manager John Shanahan served in WW I) and have been in these types of games before so it should be a great game.  Pick here is Kampersal in close one.
