Week #7: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 5/28)

Week 7 saw all the Top 5 teams in ‘A’ Division notch wins as Braggville disposed of Jasper Rock 7-3 behind 1B Chad Engel’s 2 hits and 3 RBI.   The ageless Paul Murphy  collected 2 hits and threw out a runner at the plate in the 5th to squash a Jasper threat.  Kampersal stomped Mudville 11-5 behind the 4-hit, 6 RBI game OF Chris Boggess.  The Kampersal slugger hit a 3-run homer in the first, singled in the 3rd, tripled in the 5th and, tried to ‘coast’ in to 2B for a double in the 7th (for the cycle) but was waved to 3rd as the Mudville outfielders re-enacted the scene from ‘Bad News Bears’ when Miguel plays the outfield and tries to throw the ball in from the wall.   That gurgling noise you hear is Mudville’s season headed down the drain and back into the ‘B’ division.  The year-end finale vs Downtown will have major implications as to which teams drop down to ‘B’ division.  Look here weekly for the countdown to that match-up.  In the late game, DYR overcame an 8-run first by Queens and won 15-14 on a 2-out single by catcher RJ Arsenault in the bottom of the 7th that drove in Zach Raymond with the winning run.  Trailing by 3 headed into their last at bat, SS Jason MacDonald crushed a 2-run homer to cut it to 1 and key 2-out hits by 3B Gerry DiLuzio and 2B Ben Leverone kept the inning alive for Arsenault’s heroics.  Queens CF Brian Bosselman was a beast going 4-4 with 2 triples and 4 RBI’s while 1B John Abucewicz had 3 hits in the loss.  Queens P Dan Pessin went 2-4 with a double and 2-runs scored. The Lions squeaked by the Hood 16-15 as 2B Mark Dudley had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s while OF Ernie Tomacelli continued his assault on the single-season hit record with 4 more hits in the win. Dalton Rd got back to their winning ways, beating South, 14-6 behind LF Tim McDevitt’s 3 hits and the pitching of veteran Jack Kober (7 IP, 2 ER).    South P Bryan Sweeney needed to be sedated post-game with tranquilizer dart as the local game warden witnessed his tirade and feared for the safety of others in the area.  Dalton Rd welcomed back 1B Dave Birmingham after the slugger missed last week to begin his boxing career with fight in a cancer charity boxing match at the House of Blues.  After pummeling his opponent in the 2nd round (congrats!) Birm boarded a flight to Las Vegas and was later seen partying with Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson at the Bellagio along with a Bengal tiger, 2 midgets, and an array of exotic dancers.   What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, right Birm?

Downtown pounded Long Distance Tire 10-2 behind 3B Rich Rodriguez’s 3 run double in the 5th to break open the game and give embattled manager Mike Adams a ‘stay of execution’ for at least another week.  OF Todd Kiley extending his hitting streak to 6 games with a single in the 5th while SS John Drohan started his own streak at 1 with a swinging bunt single in the 2nd.  As stated above, their year-end game vs Mudville will have major implications on who moves up/down next season.  Anthony’s East blanked Brentwood 10-0.  That’s all I have on this game since I got to Anthony’s after 8:15pm which, apparently, is way after Anthony’s manager John Shanahan’s bedtime.  Next week, expect a 2-game re-cap for Anthony’s….

The ‘fittest SS on Earth”, Mark Landry of Mudville connects for line-drive single in the 2nd inning of his team's 11-5 loss to Kampersal at Damigella Field.
