Week #6: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 5/20)

by Ken Sawyers
5/22/2018

The Sunday Night Game of the Week featured a key ‘A’ Division matchup between undefeated Dalton Rd and DYR.   Not much offense in this one until the 4th when Dalton scored 3 times sparked by a 2-out triple by 2B Jay Krantz.  DYR tied it in the 5th on a Ken Sawyers 3-run HR to right that deflected off the glove of the RF and over the fence.  I’ll take it, though.  Homeruns don’t grow on trees.  DYR picked up 2 more runs in the 7th to go up 7-5 and then held off Dalton in the bottom of the 7th thanks to a sparkling play by 3B Ben ‘twinkle toes’ Leverone.  With 1 on and 2-out, the ‘cat-like’ 3B dove to his left to stab a sharp grounder and then threw from his knees to get the force at 2b to end the game and knock Dalton Rd from the ranks of the unbeaten as DYR holds on, 7-5.  In another key ‘A’ contest,

South P Bryan Sweeney delivers a pitch in his teams 4-2 loss to Brentwood at Dimagella Field.

Braggville squeaked by Kampersal, 15-3 behind the bat of LF Dan Kittredge’s 4 hits and 4 RBI’s.  Kampersal was without speedy lead-off hitter Derek Jordan who put himself ahead of the team and drove 1,200 miles to do a 12-mile obstacle race this weekend in southern Tennessee.  Player/manager Tom Kampersal will re-evaluate Jordan’s role with the team for the remainder of the year. Inside sources tell me a fine and 2-gm suspension seem likely. Mudville slipped by the Lions 5-2 as 70’s rock legend P Steve Miller dominated yet again on the mound.  Miller gave up just 2 hits (both to Lions OF Ernie ‘hit man’ Tomacelli) over 7 innings and struck out the side in the 3rd and 5th.    Anthony’s East beat a struggling Downtown (lost 3 of 4) 10-6 as 2B Mike Delprete and SS David Robinson combined for 7 hits and 9 RBI on the night.  Despite the loss, Downtown still showed up at Anthony’s postgame:

Oh, wait, never mind….   No one ‘circles the wagons’ like Downtown! I’m sure the postgame team meeting at the manager’s house will turn their year around.  Here’s a hint; bat McCarron 4th!

‘B’ leader Jasper Rock knocked off Queens 7-2 behind the Cordon brothers, Derek & Jeremy combining for 6 hits and 5 RBI’s.  Long Distance Tire held on for a 7-6 victory over winless Hood thanks to the play of embattled 2B Chris Landers.  Landers, whose been struggling this season, had his first multi-hit game in 4 years and drove in the winning run with a check-swing bloop single to left to score Dave Kiem from third base with the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.  The upset of the night had 1-win Brentwood beat ‘B’ Division leader South, 4-2.  South P Bryan Sweeney took the loss in stride and only smashed 3 bats, kicked over 2 trash cans, and verbally abused just 7 teammates on his way out.

Downtown’s table at Anthony’s on the Green following their 10-6 loss to Anthony’s East.
