Mindful Meditation

“Sometimes you need to sit lonely on the floor in a quiet room in order to hear your own voice and not let it drown in the noise of others.”   ?

We are so pleased to offer this 6 week program starting on June 21st and continuing weekly with July 26th being the last of this series.  Come practice the art of conscious living as we release the stress of the day and nurture greater clarity, awareness and acceptance of the present moment.  This series will be taught by Jean O’Connor, a graduate of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program at UMass Medical School, student of Master Ed Williamson of Pathways and our very own Senior Center Tai Chi Teacher. There is a $4.00 donation requested for each class.

Please call the Senior Center at 508-429-0622 to reserve your space for both these programs.  Ask for Marty should you need further information.

Presented by District Attorney Marian Ryan and Holliston Police Department

“Safety Program for Senior Citizens to Raise Awareness about the Opioid Crisis”

Monday, June 4, 2018 at 1:00 pm

Have you ever had an operation, such as a hip or knee replacement, for which you were prescribed pain medication?  Do you suffer from chronic pain, such as arthritis or osteoporosis?  Chances are you have been prescribed an opioid, even if you were not aware (e.g., Percocet, Vicodin, OxyContin, Fentanyl).  Whether you actively take an opioid or were prescribed one in the past, there is important information about which seniors should be aware.  With the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the midst of an unprecedented public health epidemic, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has developed a safety program for senior citizens to raise awareness about the opioid crisis, specifically how it directly impacts them.

District Attorney Ryan will discuss the far-reaching effects of this problem as well as offer tips on how to manage prescription medication using the File of Life program.  In addition, she will talk about ways to safeguard medication from theft; how to properly dispose of unused or expired medication; how to identify signs of drug addiction in a loved one and bridge them to help.  Complimentary File of Life refrigerator magnets and personal wallet cards will be distributed to seniors who attend.

Please sign up in advance for this informative program by calling the Senior Center at (508) 429-0622.

“1968: AMERICA AND THE WORLD

The Pentagon Papers

Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 10:00am

(Continental Breakfast Provided by Timothy Daniels House)

Secretly directed by Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, Daniel Ellsberg along with other policy analysts were asked to prepare a full review of American military and political involvement in Vietnam since the end of World War II. What followed was a 7,000-page expose revealing that American policymakers had systemically lied to the public, journalists and Congress about America involvement throughout all of Indochina since 1945.  “As a responsible citizen”, said Ellsberg, “I believed it to be my moral responsibility to leak the Papers to the press to end “a wrongful war.”  Ellsberg was subsequently charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 for conspiracy, espionage and theft of government property.
