Women Build

Habitat for Humanity MetroWest/Greater Worcester (HFH-MW/GW) announces its annual Women Build event at 72 Chamberlain Street in Holliston. We will host local teams who will build at the home to call attention to the lack of local affordable housing for single women. Some of the teams taking part in Women Build in Holliston are from Consigli Construction, Framingham State University, Colantonio Construction, TJX, National Development, and Natick Moms and Dads. Bertucci’s in Holliston is sponsoring all of the Women Build lunches.

Women Build is all about helping local single women own a safe, decent and affordable home. Since 1991, Women Build volunteers from all walks of life have come together to build stronger, safer communities. Our future homeowners are largely comprised of women and children who most often have been affected by poor living conditions. Our Women Build events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in helping other women improve their living situations.

About the Holliston Build

The Holliston single family home is located on a lovely country road and will be home to Maggie, a local single woman with three young sons pictured above who are looking forward to playing soccer in the back yard. There are two homes located on the Holliston site – 68 and 72 Chamberlain Street. The home at 68 Chamberlain Street was dedicated in 2017 to another single woman, Mona, also with young children. Maggie was actually first in line to receive the home at 68 Chamberlain Street, but when she found out that Mona was homeless, she gave up her spot so that Mona and her family would have a safe and affordable home to live in. I’ve attached a photo of Maggie and her three children.

Our mission is to build homes, community and hope for low-income families in 42 cities and towns throughout Greater Worcester and MetroWest. Under the motto of “a hand up, not a handout,” we build houses with families rather than for them. Partner families must contribute 400 to 500 hours of “sweat equity” building their homes and learning skills to become successful homeowners. The families will then buy the home at a 0% interest rate mortgage based on their income, which must fall between 30% – 60% of the area’s median income.
