Second Annual HPA Memorial Golf Tournament - A Family Event

There were clear skies for the Holliston Police Association to hold their second annual Memorial Golf Tournament on June 10th. This tournament is a memorial for two police officers that passed away, Officer John Johnson in 1981 and Lieutenant Shawn Moore in 2014. The funds raised by the golf tournament will support a scholarship provided by the Holliston Police Association.

Throughout the morning, many teams of friends, family and local police officers participated in the tournament. One of them included an organizer of the tournament, Sergeant Matthew Waugh.  Sergeant Waugh was the first to receive the scholarship back in 2001 and now volunteers with the tournament. “It’s nice to continue to memorialize them (John Johnson and Shawn Moore) and the sacrifice they made for this town,” said Sergeant Waugh.

There were plenty of teams out on the golf course that day, including the Coakley family. This is a family of golfers who have been playing golf for years and this was their first time at the tournament. They said that their game was going “surprisingly well” but they also mentioned that even if they weren’t winning, they would be having fun regardless. Ethan Coakley is a member of the Holliston Police Department and joined the force just before Shawn Moore passed away. Ethan explained that he didn’t know him very well, but he heard he was a great guy. The family commented, “We’re here today to support a good cause and to have some fun.”

Others that participated in the golf tournament were members of the Hickey family and friends.  Father and daughter, Paul and Kate Hickey, made up one team.  Kate is a current Holliston police officer.  Her brother Kevin Hickey played on a competing team.  Kate’s family and friends were there to support her and the Holliston Police while also having a fun time for a good cause.

An interesting team was the Holliston Old Guys (H.O.G). The Holliston H.O.Gs are an amateur sports hockey team that was there to support a fellow hockey team member, Brian Johnson. All had a good time.

Brian Johnson, above right, son of Officer John Johnson, was also playing today on the course with his friends Tim Klaus (center) and Dave Kanozan. Both of Brian’s friends were also part of the tournament last year. Brian was too young to remember his father before he passed away, but he and his friends supported the police department and had a good time helping a good cause that day.

There were many other teams that day, with smiles all around, playing the game and having a blast doing it.
