(Medway/Ashland celebrating overtime win versus Burlington)

On Saturday, March 12th the Holliston HS Girls high school hockey players, as part of the Medway/Ashland Co-op, will play #3 Wellesley (16-2-2) on Saturday night at 6:00 PM in Bourne at the Gallo Arena.  The #22 seeded Medway/Ashland advanced to the quarter finals by beating Marshfield and Burlington in the first two rounds of MIAA Division II girls high school ice hockey.

In the first round, sophomore Katie McGoff scored halfway through overtime to lift Medway/Ashland (12-7-2) to an upset over #11 Marshfield 4-3.  Medway/Ashland fell behind early in the game before Holliston junior Ashley Fondo tied the game halfway through period one.  Marshfield scored the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead late into the second period.  Junior Gabby Airosus rallied Medway/Ashland by scoring with less than a minute left in the period to cut the lead to one.  Midway through the final period Airosus scored her second goal of the game to tie Marshfield 3-3, setting up McGoff’s game winning goal in overtime.

In round two, Medway/Ashland faced #6 Burlington Red Devils (14-3-2) in Burlington.  Burlington came into the tournament with a 17 game unbeaten streak.  Unlike the first round, Medway struck early when Ashley Fondo scored just 45 seconds into period one.  This set the tone for the rest of the game as Medway/Ashland outplayed the much higher ranked Red Devils.

In the second period, Burlington scored three goals to take a 3-2 lead into the final period.  Medway/Ashland’s lone goal was scored by Gabby Airosus on a rebound.

Early in the third period senior Kerryann Goode tied the score at 3-3.  Burlington then took advantage of a Medway/Ashland penalty and went ahead 4-3 on the power play with just over seven minutes remaining.  Two minutes later Medway/Ashland had their own power play when Burlington was called for a hooking penalty.  Medway/Ashland capitalized as Fondo tied the score with just under five minutes left in the period.  In a repeat performance, Medway/Ashland again won in dramatic fashion as Airosus scored with just 4.1 seconds left in overtime, giving Medway/Ashland a 5-4 win.   Airosus finished with two goals and two assists, while Goode had four assists and a goal, and Fondo had two goals and two assists.

On Saturday, March 12th a fan bus will be available at Holliston HS.  Tickets for the game can be purchased at the door or by going to the MIAA website at https://statechamps.com/clients/miaa
