HIB GETTING READY TO BLOOM FOR 2016

Holliston in Bloom had its first meeting of the year in late January. The committee discussed projects for the coming year. Among our beautification projects that we hope to complete in 2016 (depending on how much money we can raise: adding and replacing plantings at the Holliston Senior Center, and replacing plantings and creating new areas at the Police Department with the help of Eagle Scout Brandon Battick. We will also be working with the Placentino School on plans for a new area to support the science curriculum inside the Linda Weene Courtyard of Discovery Garden and a pollinator garden with the Green Team at the Adams Middle School. Many hands will be needed, especially at the Placentino School, so please look for updates in the coming months.

Co-chair Kathy Shore announced that Holliston in Bloom has 501c3 status! We hope that our tax-exempt status will encourage friends to donate to HIB as we are totally self-funded. Holliston will be the host of the 2017 America in Bloom National Symposium so we will be extra busy planning that event as well.

Co-chair Mark Ahronian recently met with Town Administrator Jeff Ritter to discuss the detailed America in Bloom Judges Evaluation from their visit in July 2015. Holliston was evaluated by these criteria: Overall Impression, The remarkable transformation of Blair Square/Rail Trail area was noted by the judges. The judges also mentioned that the area could use some trash barrels to encourage residents to keep the area clean. We are excited to report that Mr. Ritter has agreed to add two trash barrels and a recycling receptacle to Blair Square! Our first fundraiser will be organized by Bobby “The Mayor” Blair for Sunday, March 13, 2016. The St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast (Roast) will be at Anthony’s on the Green Restaurant at Pinecrest. Tickets are only $10.00 and are available from Town Hall, the Mayor, or Pat Duffey. The event starts at 9:00 AM. Local humor, new song performed by Singing Selectman Jay Marsden, and a hearty breakfast are included. Seating is limited so be sure to buy your tickets early!
