The Butterfly Aviary is Open

The new Butterfly Aviary, up behind the Pinecrest Golf Course entrance, came about through PJ Kilkelly and the AgCom's vision and the earnest efforts of local gardeners, butterfly hatchers, builders, and artists. It was helped along with donations from the Holliston Newcomers and Scott's Miracle Gro. It is a magical place to explore the wonders of world of butterflies.

PJ Kilkelly told the story of how it came together.  While AgCom members stood waiting for the official ribbon cutting. (l. to r.) Justin Brown, Tony Lulek, PJ, Natalie Kent, Janet Horne, Carolyn Dykema, Paula Mark, and Tayla Doolin.

PJ cuts the ribbon. It's official! All were welcomed to step into the steamy aviary and see the butterflies -- about 200 -- everywhere in the light filled space.

State Representative Carolyn "Butterfly" Dykema.

PJ Kilkelly was so happy to share this beautiful space that he created with the town. Here he poses with Carolyn Dykema.

AgCom member Janet Horne served up hot dogs and snacks all afternoon.

Holliston High School student, Genevieve Kent (above) sits in front of the amazing mural she painted inside the aviary.

Donna Kramer, one of the founding members of Holliston's Agricultural Commission, was recognized for her years of service on the commission. She spoke passionately about the importance of agriculture in the town, reminding us that agriculture means food.

Watching the wonder of the children was the best part of the event.

Sometimes it seemed like there weren't many butterflies around.

You had to look deep into the plants to see that they were filled with butterflies. It's a great place to visit. Many thanks to everyone involved for creating the butterfly aviary. It's a brilliant community effort.

Like butterflies, we all become an unencumbered spirit in such a peace filled place as the Butterfly Aviary - thank you HAC and community!
