Extraordinary Gift of Caring

In the middle of our very snowy weather, as I arrived home from work one day my husband who is in his 80’s said look at all the snow in the backyard.

Earlier in the afternoon he heard the doorbell ring and, when he checked, he saw a ladder against our house and an unrecognizable man shoveling snow from our roof.  Incredulous at the sight he asked the stranger who he was and the man replied the father of your neighbor, just: “neighbor helping neighbor”! He, a man we had never met, was shoveling our roof with his daughter, a young mother of a toddler.

They shoveled our roof for more than two hours in frigid temperatures and were joined by her husband when he came home from work. They then cleared the snow around the base of the house and widened the path to the front door. I was overwhelmed by their generosity that our neighbors would do this for us. The husband said we were worried about you. Who would not be emotionally touched that someone was worrying about you?

This young couple had only been our neighbors for about three years. In the summer we exchanged views of our flowers and lawns. She had given me seeds of lupine which I could not grow. But this very snowy winter we received their priceless, very generous gift of caring.

This story of kindness is just one more reason why I am proud to say, "I live in Holliston"

Great story! I have several too. Here's one: Back when my 2nd grade son went to the hospital for major surgery, I came home after hours there, to shower and change. We had left in an ambulance without locking up the house. There were two casseroles in the refrigerator, the lawn had been mowed, the bird feeder had been filled, my dogs had been walked, and someone had arranged to have my toddler stay with them. It pretty much all anonymous. These kind of things have happened in my little corner of Holliston for decades. The gift of caring brings well-being to the one who needs a bit of help, but also to the giver, and the momentum of such kindness tends to spread!
