As a local Holliston resident abstract artist, this year, 2015, may prove to be an exciting adventure! The entire family is headed to Italy in May, to experience the beauty of landscape, wonderful art, travel, food, wine, and the making of a whole host of new friends.

A gratifying and totally enjoyable residence as artist at Fruitlands Museum, Harvard, MA, came to a close at the end of the year 2014. Searching for further artistic opportunities, I applied to and have been accepted for an Artist Residence in Italy for 2015.

La Macina di San Cresci is an historic church/farm complex in Greve, Italy, situated between Florence and Siena, in the middle of historic Tuscany. La Macina is an arts oriented complex owned and operated by Ducio Trassinelli, a renowned Italian industrial designer, and Demetria Verduci, an architect, educated in Florence, and actively practicing professionally. Ducio and Demetria have spent the last 15 years restoring this Etruscan historic place. La Macina is devoted to painting, sculpture, photography, arts education, and to providing home away from home for artists gathered from around the world.  The historic church and structures occupy some of the loveliest land in all the world, composed of ancient grape vineyards and olive groves situated high on a hilltop overlooking resplendent farms and forests surrounding.

For the month of May, my wife Barbara, son Matt, daughter Miah, and I plan to reside in a farmer’s house on site. Our plans include traveling locally to vineyards, villages, villas, and gardens of note, with perhaps rail trips to more distant places of interest to us. Absorbing the entire Italian culture shall enhance our lives and provide “world view” perspectives!

It is my responsibility as Artist in Residence to produce several large abstract canvases 5’x 5’ or 6’x 6’, painted plein air, while interacting with visitors, other artists studying at La Macina, and local residents. At the end of the Residence, my art works are to be exhibited in a public format at La Macina, to be arranged once works are completed.

We are awaiting our passports with the great anticipation, and are awed by the possibilities!
