Holliston Awarded Grant to Purchase Carseats
Today the Holliston Police Department announced that they will receive $2,000 from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) to provide carseats to families in need. These funds are part of $150,000 in federal funding for Massachusetts municipalities, not-for-profit hospitals and regional non-profit organizations with the sole public purpose of purchasing federally-approved child passenger safety (CPS) seats for distribution at CPS checkups and fitting stations..
This program aims to help reduce child passenger fatalities and injuries by distributing federally-approved car seats to residents in need as well as educating parents, grandparents and child caregivers on the proper installation and usage of child safety seats. Anyone, who is in need of a new carseat is encouraged to call the police department (508-429-1212) or email the grant coordinator/carseat technician (Waugh@HollistonPolice.com). Orders are being placed in the upcoming weeks.
Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among children in the United States. But many of these deaths can be prevented.
Risk Reduction for Every Age
Buckling children in age and size appropriate car seats, booster seats, and seat belts reduces the risk of serious and fatal injuries:
- Car seat use reduces the risk for death to infants (aged <1 year) by 71%; and to toddlers (aged 1–4 years) by 54% in passenger vehicles.
- Booster seat use reduces the risk for serious injury by 45% for children aged 4–8 years when compared with seat belt use alone.
- For older children and adults, seat belt use reduces the risk for death and serious injury by approximately half.
